There is also a small downtown area near that is easily walkable with shops and restaurants. Not especially fancy or extravagant but I would say similar to what you would expect at a country club versus fine dining. The food and drinks were very good and priced fairly.
Every night there were people with beach fire pits and bar b que's (all set up and arranged by the club) on the beach. All Staff were friendly and helpful and I would say the same about other guests. I met family there and there seemed to be a lot of guests doing the same, so there are some large and medium sized groups there as well as Members of the Club using the amenities as well. Some have ocean views and some do not, so many choices, and a range of price points, if available.

Some large with full kitchens, some with kitchenettes and some basic rooms. Do not expect a brand new hotel and furnishings. Rooms are as described and well maintained and clean. This is not what I would consider a 5 star/Ritz Carlton type resort and I don't think they portray it as such. I think it is as described and pictured on their website. There are times during a vacation when you just want to rest for an hour or two, and it seemed a shame to be in a hotel room when the weather was so perfect.Ġ.95km from The Cave Store I am giving this an Excellent rating as I think it is an exceptional resort in an fantastic setting on the beach in La Jolla. Probably the biggest downside of the Empress is the lack of outdoor space such as a garden or patio. There is an Italian restaurant in the hotel called The Manhattan we did not eat there but it looked inviting and had live music one evening when we walked by. The carpet in the hallways definitely needs to be replaced, and dishes from room service need to be picked up from the hallway more promptly. We asked to leave our car in the garage for a couple of hours after checkout and were told we could leave it there all day! The room was not luxurious but was comfortable and clean the bed was excellent-the shower water pressure could have been better. The driveway to the garage is quite steep. There is underground parking for $24/day ($28/day valet). The staff is extremely nice and responsive. 0.72km from The Cave Store The Empress is in an excellent location, just a few blocks from the La Jolla Cove and near many restaurants and shops.
